Hospital Operations and Compliance Guides

Plain English guides for people who run a hospital in India or are about to open one. Each guide explains one rule or one daily task and shows who wrote it.

Starting a Hospital in India

What a new hospital uses in its first month, which registrations must be ready before opening and why supplies and software are best set up together.

What Our Hospital Guides Cover

We write about two areas where hospital owners in India find the least clear help. The first is the rules a hospital must follow. The second is the daily work of running its store, pharmacy and billing. We do not write hospital software comparisons.

  • Compliance and Registrations

The registrations and standards a hospital must meet in India. This includes HFR registration under ABDM, NABH accreditation, DLT registration for hospital SMS and GST e-invoices.

    See compliance guides
  • Hospital Operations

How a hospital runs from day to day. This includes store and pharmacy stock, reorder levels, patient ID numbers such as the UHID, billing and the supplies a new hospital uses in its first month.

Questions About Our Hospital Guides

  • What is hospital operations management?

Hospital operations management is the day to day running of everything around patient care. It covers the front desk, store and pharmacy stock, billing, insurance claims, staff rosters and keeping the hospital supplied. When operations work well, doctors and nurses always have what they need and patients are billed correctly.

  • What is DLT registration and why does a hospital need it?

DLT stands for Distributed Ledger Technology. Under TRAI rules every business that sends SMS to customers in India must register on a DLT platform run by the phone networks. The business registers its name, its sender ID and each message template. A hospital needs this before it can send appointment reminders, reports or bill alerts by SMS. Messages that are not registered are blocked.

  • What is a UHID number in a hospital?

UHID stands for Unique Health Identification. In a hospital it is the patient ID number given at the first visit. The same number is then used on every file, test report and bill at that hospital. It is different from the ABHA number, which is a national health ID that works across hospitals.

  • What is NABH accreditation?

NABH is the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers. It is a board of the Quality Council of India that sets quality and patient safety standards for hospitals. A hospital can start with NABH entry level certification and later move to full accreditation, which has more standards to meet.

  • What is the difference between NABH entry level and full accreditation?

NABH full accreditation is the complete standard. A hospital must meet more than 600 checkpoints, called objective elements, to earn it. Entry level certification is a smaller first step that covers the basic quality and patient safety standards. Many hospitals start at entry level and move to full accreditation later. Hospitals apply for entry level online through the NABH portal called HOPE.

  • What is a reorder level in a hospital store?

A reorder level is the stock count at which the store orders more of an item. A simple way to set it is to multiply how much you use in a day by the number of days the supplier takes to deliver. Then add a small safety stock on top. A new hospital has no past usage yet, so check and reset every reorder level after ninety days.

  • What does first expiry first out mean in a hospital pharmacy?

First expiry first out means the store always gives out the batch that expires soonest, even if it arrived later. This stops medicines and consumables from expiring on the shelf. Hospital software such as Jazline360 can flag batches that are close to expiry and show staff which batch to issue first.
